Cardamom (Ellettaria cardamomum) historically was used in the Middle Ages by Indian healers and was nicknamed “Grains of Paradise”. It was considered to be a valuable spice in Ancient Greece and Rome and was use by the king. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical documentations the Ebers Papyrus (approximately 16th century BC) this is an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

Cardamom essential oil has some key chemical constituents: Eucalyptol and Alpha-Terpinyl acetate. See David Stewart’s book called The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple for more details on how these components make the essential oil beneficial.
