Favorite Grief Supporting Essential Oils

Let’s discuss some essential oils to help support the grief process. Grief is something we all go through from time to time. Maybe you lost a loved one or broke up with a loved one are just are not getting along with someone you love and care for.  No matter the cause, grief is painful to go through.

Stages Of Grief

There are 5 documented stages of grief per the Kübler-Ross model, which is described as a series of emotions experienced by terminally ill patients prior to death, or people who have lost a loved one, wherein the five stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.  You can read more about Grief in the book by Kubler Ross entitled “Of Grief and Grieving“.

Let me briefly describe each stage for you and share some essential oils you may try during each stage. Note, all grief does not necessarily go through each of these stages.

Denial is the first stage of grief. This stage helps with survival of loss and sorrow. Things can becoming overwhelming during this time with meaning being lost to it all. Shock can help with survival during this time as this phase fades into the next stage these oils may help support.

Some great oils to use during the Denial phase are Geranium and Lavender.

Anger is the next stage where you begin to feel more compared to the denial stage where everything may feel numb. The emotions are strong as they kick in. This stage may make you question if God is really there, where was He? Under all this lies your deep rooted pain from the situation you are walking through.

Some oils that may help support the Anger stage and during times of anger include your favorite calming oils such as Peace & Calming, Stress Away and Roman Chamomile.

Bargaining sometimes occurs before a major loss where you may plead with God for what you wish to happen. Guilt sometimes is an emotion experiences during this phase as you go through the “If Only’s”…this stage can last months depending on the situation.

Some essential oils to use during this time may include Forgiveness, SARA, Hope, Peppermint.

Depression can be the next stage from deep sadness to clinical depression. This time can leave one feeling empty and loss. Some become withdrawn to other things going on around them in their “everyday life”. This stage is very normal especially after the loss of a loved one as we know that the stages of grief are all necessary for the healing process.

Some oils to help deep sadness and periods of depression may include Frankincense, Cypress and Joy

Acceptance is about dealing and accepting the reality of the situation. It doesn’t mean one is ever “ok” with what has happened but they have developed their own method of coping and is the beginnings of moving forward with their life. Things are often forever different and changed but one moves into a re-adjustment period and learning to live differently. In the case of losing a loved one, they will have “good days” and “bad days”. New connections can start to be made.

Some oils to help support during the Acceptance stage are: Present Time and Acceptance, Coriander and Orange.

Essential Oils to Support Sorrow and Grief

Did you know that you can use essential oils to naturally support your emotions? I listed some oils for the different grief stages but there are many oils to support sorrow and sometimes you need to experiment a bit to figure out which one you best respond to.

Bergamot is thought to help turn sorrow into Joy.  Some other singles you could also use include Lavender, Eucalyptus, Roman Chamomile, Juniper and White Angelica.

Young Living has many blends that would wonderful to support sorrow as well including Forgiveness, Gentle Baby, Present Time, Release, 3 Wise Men, Valor or even Joy.

How To Use EO’s for Emotions

I often wear diffuser jewelry as well so that I can continue to smell the oils. You can even bring oils with you in the car or to the office with a portable diffuser.

Massage is a great way to use oils for emotional release. You can have someone do a raindrop on your with emotional oils or do a modified one on your self.

Taking Time To Meditate With Essential Oils

How to Meditate

Meditating can be done in many ways. Sit back and practice deep breathing. I enjoy reading something inspirational or a biblical passage or story or even listening to worship music. I then consider what I’ve heard or read and get grateful and give thanks and pray. You can also find something inspiring and speak it out loud over yourself. It can be something you are working on just truth over your life. The more positive thoughts and words we feed our own mind the better to push out the every day negatives and challenges we may face. Speaking and memorizing scripture is also another wonderful practice.

Tulum, Mexico-A Beautiful Place to Find Peace

I had the opportunity to spend some time in Mexico recently. It was of course beautiful and tropical. We took a tour of Tulum which is where some of the Mayan ancient ruins are located. Talk about history and energy in this beautiful place that remains that is over 5000 years old. We were on a tour and we were able to participate in a group meditation. It was beautiful and I was especially thrilled that I had Young Living essential oils on hand for my trip to Tulum.

Tulum & Oils for Meditation

I chose Oola Balance to apply to my aromatherapy bracelet and Envision I applied to the back of my neck and crown, while I wore Gratitude blend over my heart. The names alone inspire some mood balancing. The oils in these blend are specially formulated and selected to support particular emotions. Oils can help open your mind and help you to improve your life experiences.

Diving In Deeper

Let’s look a little closer at these oil blends that I chose and see why.

Gratitude is a blend that contains 6 essential oils including Balsam Fir, Frankincense, Rosewood, Myrrh, Galbanum and Ylang Ylang. This blend contains 3 biblical oils. Myrrh helps to promote
spiritual awareness, when we open our heart and mind. Galbanum with Frankincense were used in ancient times to enhance communication to the Lord. I enjoy using Gratitude blend to encourage myself to reflect on my many blessings of health, family, abundance, adventures and any blessings that I encounter daily.

Envision is a blend of 6 oils including orange, sage, spruce, geranium, lavender and rose essential oils. I love the smell of this oil and what better time to ENVISION what you want in your life than while meditating! You can learn more about Envision essential oil in this post on my vacation oils.
OOLA Balance is a new blend for me. This is part of the Oola collection specially designed to help bring balance as one strives for wellness, purpose, abundance and vitality in life. Oh my word this blend contains 23 oils! Learn about Oola Balance here. These three oils together helped create balance and calmness and a sense of peace and well-being.

Emotionally Reconnect With Essential Oils

Today  I was thinking about the ability to reconnect  as I reflect on Memorial Day.  I am so grateful and thankful for the sacrifices that have been made by many men, women and their families. Because of their willingness to serve, we have many freedoms in America that I feel so lucky to have. I began thinking about how when people come back from service or from any tragic and stressful event, sometimes a piece of them is missing and it may take time to re-adjust. Getting into the groove of  basic activities can induce stressful memories and disturb sleep when your emotions are not in balance.

Emotional well-being is so key to life’s many successes. Things can happen to us along our journey called life that could potentially set us back emotionally. There are many trials and tribulations that we must endure and perservere through. When I am in a state of turbulence and unbalance I first and foremost lean on my Creator. People use all kinds of things  to help them along difficult paths. This can be in many forms from healthy things such as yoga, exercise and eating right to non-healthy activities such as drugs, alcohol, smoking or even  prescriptions.
