Favorite Grief Supporting Essential Oils

Let’s discuss some essential oils to help support the grief process. Grief is something we all go through from time to time. Maybe you lost a loved one or broke up with a loved one are just are not getting along with someone you love and care for.  No matter the cause, grief is painful to go through.

Stages Of Grief

There are 5 documented stages of grief per the Kübler-Ross model, which is described as a series of emotions experienced by terminally ill patients prior to death, or people who have lost a loved one, wherein the five stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.  You can read more about Grief in the book by Kubler Ross entitled “Of Grief and Grieving“.

Let me briefly describe each stage for you and share some essential oils you may try during each stage. Note, all grief does not necessarily go through each of these stages.

Denial is the first stage of grief. This stage helps with survival of loss and sorrow. Things can becoming overwhelming during this time with meaning being lost to it all. Shock can help with survival during this time as this phase fades into the next stage these oils may help support.

Some great oils to use during the Denial phase are Geranium and Lavender.

Anger is the next stage where you begin to feel more compared to the denial stage where everything may feel numb. The emotions are strong as they kick in. This stage may make you question if God is really there, where was He? Under all this lies your deep rooted pain from the situation you are walking through.

Some oils that may help support the Anger stage and during times of anger include your favorite calming oils such as Peace & Calming, Stress Away and Roman Chamomile.

Bargaining sometimes occurs before a major loss where you may plead with God for what you wish to happen. Guilt sometimes is an emotion experiences during this phase as you go through the “If Only’s”…this stage can last months depending on the situation.

Some essential oils to use during this time may include Forgiveness, SARA, Hope, Peppermint.

Depression can be the next stage from deep sadness to clinical depression. This time can leave one feeling empty and loss. Some become withdrawn to other things going on around them in their “everyday life”. This stage is very normal especially after the loss of a loved one as we know that the stages of grief are all necessary for the healing process.

Some oils to help deep sadness and periods of depression may include Frankincense, Cypress and Joy

Acceptance is about dealing and accepting the reality of the situation. It doesn’t mean one is ever “ok” with what has happened but they have developed their own method of coping and is the beginnings of moving forward with their life. Things are often forever different and changed but one moves into a re-adjustment period and learning to live differently. In the case of losing a loved one, they will have “good days” and “bad days”. New connections can start to be made.

Some oils to help support during the Acceptance stage are: Present Time and Acceptance, Coriander and Orange.
